Hottest (Whitest, Malest, Angstiest) 100 of All-Time (but mostly of the last 20 years)

(I wrote this in anger last Sunday night, but now I’ve cooled off, taken a step back and I’m looking at it with a little more perspective. I’ll add sensible notes in italics.)

So Triple J finished playing their Hottest 100 of All-Time last Sunday. I listened to most of the Top 20, having read the list of the previous 80 and been decidedly underwhelmed. I can’t say I had much hope that Triple J listeners’ taste in music had improved since I quit the station in disgust some years ago, but I was pleasantly surprised by much of the top 20. However, one thing stood out from the full list: the voters had a REALLY narrow range of tastes in what they voted for. Now I can understand that a poll of a certain group of people would reflect that particular group more than it would reflect the broader population, I’m just surprised by how narrow-minded this particular group of voters was.
